BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU (BJJ)
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a very practical martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. It is a derivative of early 20th century Kodokan Judo, which was, itself then a recently-developed system (founded in 1882). The system of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was evolved by the Gracie family and has become extremely popular throughout the world.
It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant using joint-locks, chokeholds, control and escape skills to defeat an opponent. BJJ can be trained for self defence, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competition. Sparring (commonly referred to as a rolling) and live drilling play a major role in training.
Double Dragon has had BJJ as a structured component of their Freestyle system, most of the senior instructors and students undertake BJJ as an extension of their stand up arts. Senior BJJ coach at Double Dragon is Bernado Trekko, a Brazilian Gracie Black belt and assistant coach is Mick Spinks who is graded to brown belt.
